Appalachian State University: (http://www.goasu.com/ )Seeking to increase its Hispanic enrollment and has developed a recruitment initiative targeted to this population. Contact the admissions office for more information.
NC Central University: (http://www.nccu.edu/) The School of Education is seeking to increase diversity in its programs and is recruiting Hispanic students interested in education careers.
Student Action with Farmworkers (www.saf-unite.org): Promotes advocacy for farmworkers and their families. SAF offers a scholarship each year through NCSU to a student that qualifies for the Migrant Education program. Additionally, SAF brings about 400 Migrant Education students to college visits each year and provides them with workshops about college planning.
The NC School of Science and Math Nueva Vista Program: (http://www.ncssm.edu/) Brings about 20 Hispanic 8th and 9th graders each spring to spend a weekend and learn about this school. Students must be nominated by teachers, counselors, tutors, etc. to participate.
The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (www.hacu.net): Represents Hispanic-Serving Institutions (those with 25% or more Hispanic enrollment), which educate more than two-thirds of all Hispanic college students in the United States. HACU led the effort to convince Congress to formally recognize campuses with high Hispanic enrollment as federally designated HSIs and to begin targeting federal appropriations to those campuses. HACU offers internships, scholarships, college retention and advancement programs, precollegiate support, and career development opportunities and programs.
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (www.HSF.net): The nation’s leading organization supporting Hispanic higher education. During its 28-year history, HSF has awarded more than 61,000 scholarships in excess of $115 million to Latinos from all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands who have attended more than 1,700 colleges and universities.
United States Citizen and Immigration Services (www.uscis.gov): Provides information about the different categories of visas available and the benefits and rights that each of them entitles (e.g. work authorization, access to higher education, etc.)
